LONG BEACH, CA – Exhibit [A] Gallery brings international watercolor artists to Downtown Long Beach. The gallery located at 555 N. Pine in Downtown Long Beach will feature a solo exhibition by Thomas Schaller as well as a three-day workshop by Paul Jackson.
Thomas Schaller has long been considered one of the foremost architectural illustrators in the world. He has authored two books: the best-selling, and AIA award of merit winner, Architecture in Watercolor, and The Art of Architectural Drawing. His artwork has been exhibited around the world including at the Art Institute of Chicago, The Graham Foundation, The American Society of Illustrators in New York City and at the Aedes-East Gallery in Berlin.
Schaller will be featured in the upcoming “Artists to Watch” issue of Watercolor Artist magazine in October 2010, as well as feature articles in American Artist and American Art Collector magazines. Recent works have been juried into numerous prestigious exhibitions including the World Expo’s Shanghai Zhujiajiao International Watercolor Biennial Exhibition, the 30th International Exhibition of the San Diego Watercolor Society and the 143rd Annual International Exhibition of the American Watercolor Society.
The show, including recent works of Southern California beach life, will open at Exhibit [A] Gallery on Friday July 2nd with a reception from 6-10pm as well as a closing reception on Saturday July 31st from 6-10pm.
During the exhibition, renowned watercolor artist Paul Jackson will host a three-day watercolor workshop entitled, “A Dramatic Landscape”. Paul is the author of Painting Spectacular Light Effects in Watercolor. His work has often been featured in the International Artist and The Artist's Magazine. The workshop will allow attendees to reach the next level of artistic confidence and ability, regarding design, color, value, textures and patterns. Using informal lectures, discussions, demonstrations and critiques, artists will develop or refine their personal painting style and find logical, creative answers to watercolor questions and problems. The three day workshop is on July 16th – 18th from 9am – 3pm, cost: $300. To register, contact, Debbie Lewis at 562-436-4543 or debbieellen.lewis@gmail.com. Open to all skill levels.
The Exhibit [A] gallery is part of an economic development project funded by the Downtown Long Beach Associates. As one of the Vayden Roi Galleries, headed by Evan Kelly and Liza Mitchell, the project transforms vacant commercial spaces into active galleries and event venues. The program, which was initiated in January of 2010, has already seen success. The initial location at 517 Pine Avenue was an abandoned Hookah Lounge. After five months of programming, the space was leased by a yoga and natural health studio whose owners had attended one of the events. Local residents have also expressed their delight with the program, “There is finally a gallery on Pine Avenue!” says Rajh Kirch who lives at 519 Pine Avenue along with hundreds of other Pine Avenue residents living in recently constructed apartment complexes and high end lofts. The project recently moved into the 555 Pine location and is looking for more spaces to build temporary galleries.
